Course Goals 1 Revision


LSS 2053 Course Goal 1 Revision


1.    Which types of Cultural Diversity exist at ADMC? Give an example from each of the ten categories in your table of ten. Say whether each one is a Challenge or a Benefit.

Challenge & Benefit
1. Religion
All Students Muslims but teacher from many religion
Benefit (to learn how to respect other people Religion by looking to the way they trait you).
2. Age
Teenagers and old people
Challenge (because the ideas or thinking of old people is different from teenagers) Benefit (we can learn a lot from old people).
3. Language
Arabic, English , and Indian
Challenge (hard to comminute with each other) Benefit (You can learn many languages).
4. Gender
Male and Female
Benefit (because it will get rid of our old thinking that the Female must stay in home).
5. Nationality
All Students Emirates but teachers from 40 different countries
Benefit (different way in teaching style and learn about different cultures). 
6. Educational background of students
Some have finished 2 or more semesters but others have come from school
Challenge (Difficult for new students)Benefit (the experienced students  can teach the freshmen
8. Clothes
Disdasha, Pants, T-shirts, Dresses and skirts.
Benefit (it will not makes you feel bored)
9. Food
Italian, Western and Arabic
Benefit (makes you try different type of all the time)

 

 

2.    Define and give an example of Acculturation.

Acculturation: The process of learning the culture of the host country.

 EX. This is important if you go abroad to study or work.

 

3.    Explain how child-raising in different cultures can have an effect on personality.

Because it can affect the way children grow up and communicate with others. A very strict upbringing could lead to a shy, withdrawn personality. These are ideas, not fact.

 

 

4.     Explain the difference between a “melting pot” and a “garden salad” related to immigration to a country such as UK, USA, Australia for example.

 

Immigration: moving from the birth country to another country to live and work, for economic reasons usually.

 

Melting Pot: all the immigrants used to be required to lose their birth identity and culture on arrival in the new country. They had to become assimilated or the same as everyone else in the host country. (That was the way in the past).

 

Garden Salad: immigrants to a new country such as Australia can keep their birth identity and culture, as well as learning the host country’s culture. This is acculturation.

 

5.     How can Multiculturalism have a positive effect on a large company?

 

Multiculturalism in company makes have fun by knowing new things in different cultures. Multiculturalism will the companies to improve their business by getting new ideas from the employers this due to their different way of thinking and solving problems this will help the company to improve their funds.
